In taking a look, at first glance, it appears that they are different in shape and in ability to be removed in a clean fashion.
I have been prosecuting patents for over a decade and can tell you that I would be surprised to see the second, newer patent application, pass an obviousness rejection from the USPTO and be granted over the 1950 patent.
I look at the office action on the newer application would be interesting because it does not appear, to me anyway, to pass one of the critical standards of patentability in that it appears to make obvious changes over the prior art.
In short, the two inventions are very similar. Very similar inventions can receive patent protection and the number of claims in the second application may be enough to overcome the obviousness rejection of the USPTO. If it does, it will be by a thin margin.
Understand also, that will you receive a patent that is very similar to prior art, or items already in the public domain, such patents are typically hard to defend against infringement. People can even challenge the existence of the patent in the first place as a defense.
