Well, eauto has been helping me with my Hyundai Sonata repair. The car was being driven when it shut itself off and coasted to a stop. It would not start again. We thought the starter/solenoid, alternator, battery and, possibly, the engine might have seized. Of these, only the battery was low on charge; around 25% capacity. It tested good, just low on charge. I charged it to 100% charge, and even replaced it with a known to be good battery and still the starter will not spin in the vehicle. Since I cannot get it to start, I cannot do an in car check of the alternator, but that does not indicate why the starter will not roll over. I checked the voltage both with the key in the running position and the starting. First was 12+ volts, and in start .06 volts. The solenoid and starter were also taken to a parts store and tested there. Both were good. I am not sure what to try next. Any ideas?

Mechanic's Assistant: How old is the battery? And have you tested it with a voltmeter?

The battery is about 1 year old. It tests at 13.2 volts now that it is fully charged. My battery charger has an alternator tester built into it, but I am under the impression that the car has to be running to use it.

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Sonata yourself? What have you tried so far?

Yes. I have turned the engine over with a 1/2" breaker bar and 22mm socket. It turned easily. I have had the alternator off and tested, the starter and solenoid off and tested and the battery off and tested. All tested good.

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

I am blank on what to do next, so not that i can think of. Thanks.

Hello and welcome to JA...the ground wire from the battery to the body is most often the problem for the concern that you are having. Remove the negative battery cable from the battery and unbolt it from where it mounts to the body...once you have it removed, take some sandpaper and scuff up the area where that cable bolted to the body... Remove any paint from that area and expose nice clean sheet metal also clean the actual part of the battery cable that bolts to the body then reinstall the battery cable to the body and then back to the battery itself and see if the vehicle starts

Ok. Just let me know what happens.When there is excessive resistance on the negative side of the circuit as you crank the engine over that's why the 12 volts drops down to .6 at your starter cuz the negative side of the circuit is weak

but kind of a starter you have is called a permanent magnet starter there is always 12 volts at the large terminal of the starter when you crank the engine over you get voltage on the smaller terminal of the starter which is the cranking signal

but it still did not work. It was raining and hailing also so I did not get the chance to do much more. I think the transmission sensor may also be playing a part in this as it won't shift and the owner applied pressure with a jack to break it free when it locked up after the car was towed from the electrical depletion of the battery. I am thinking it could be two issues. I want to put my volt meter on the switch terminal on the starter but won't be able to until tomorrow or Saturday morning. The weather andno garage to work in made it unreasonable to work for me. Thanks again for your help. I will update you tomorrow or Saturday morning when I can do more. Russ

If the shifter is hard to move then it is quite possible that it is binding up on the shift shaft that goes down through the transmission range sensor on the transmission... This is where the shifter cable connects to the transmission we have a lot of issues where an extreme amount of rust builds up inside the switch and down the shaft into the transmission normally what we have to do is remove the transmission range sensor and spray some WD-40 on the shaft and allow it to penetrate down in there so we can break it loose the most likely problem that you are having after you just explained the last statement you said to me was that inside your transmission range sensor is probably not working properly most likely due to a buildup of rust so I would remove the transmission range sensor and saturate that shaft with WD-40 or PB Blaster if you can and try to get that moving and install a new transmission range sensor and see if the problem is fixed
