I have a 2007 Hyundai Elantra, 5spd, I have a hard time

Customer Question
I have a 2007...

I have a 2007 Hyundai Elantra, 5spd, I have a hard time getting it into to reverse and sometimes first. It just started grinding going into second. It has stopped going into reverse last night. I was able to get it into reverse by shifting while the car was turned off. I want to know if this is a clutch problem....

Mechanic's Assistant: Has the clutch been slipping? Are you having any trouble shifting?

What do you mean by slipping?

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Elantra yourself? What have you tried so far?

It just recently has gotten worse

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

I don't think so

Hello my name is ***** ***** welcome to just answers! I will be assisting you with all of your vehicle questions today. Give me one moment while I review your question and come back with a answer. Please be aware I do not know your skill level or abilities so I will be asking a lot of questions and in a lot of cases we will respond to each other quite a lot before we find a solution. As far as phone calls are concerned that is the system prompting you, not me, and they do cost more money, I prefer text but in some cases a phone call is required. If I don’t answer right away or quickly in conversation I am helping another customer or have stepped out for a moment and will respond as soon as I can. Ok lets get started!

how many miles are on the car and how often do you service the transmission

Ask Your Own Hyundai Question
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
It has about 130,000 miles. When I purchased the car I replaced one of the sensors.
Hyundai Mechanic: Mechanic01, ASE Certified Technician replied 11 months ago

You should be able to go into gears no matter what, even if you have a clutch issue, I would suspect you have a internal fault, I would drain the fluid and inspect for debris and fluid wear

Ask Your Own Hyundai Question
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
When I down shift it will grind in second, I thought it would stop when I replaced the sensor.
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
Do I need to also replace the clutch?
Hyundai Mechanic: Mechanic01, ASE Certified Technician replied 11 months ago

you should check the fluid first to see if the trans is going to need any attention

Ask Your Own Hyundai Question
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
Oh and when I push in the clutch it creaks, is this normal?
Hyundai Mechanic: Mechanic01, ASE Certified Technician replied 11 months ago

yes that sounds like the pedal or fork just needs lubrication

Ask Your Own Hyundai Question
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
If the fluid is clean, what do I need to do next?
Hyundai Mechanic: Mechanic01, ASE Certified Technician replied 11 months ago

the trans would still need to be pulled for inspection, if your grinding then there is something going on internally, once pulled inspect the clutch and components for damage and wear as well, I would suspect though the fluid would have some sort of metal particles
