2002 sonata: there is no check engine light but when I was

Customer Question

2002 sonata: there is no check engine light but when I was on the freeway my car started to sputter. I did the pre buy inspection and I know I was told to replace valve cover gasket and oil pan. I did not do the compression test because the engine was working fine. This does not happen when I am on the street, this was my first time taking it on the freeway.

Hi,When the car was sputtering, did it die or just sputter and clear up?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
just sputtered and then cleared up, but I also got off the freeway.

Does it seem to be running ok now?Is it possible that maybe you had some bad fuel?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Yes it was running fine after the fact, I speed up and slowed down and no sputtering happen
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
well I just got an oil change, do you mean transmission fuel?
Expert:  Jared D replied 1 year ago.
Gas...maybe you had some bad gas.Had you just filled up recently?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
no i had not, could it be my spark plugs ?
Expert:  Jared D replied 1 year ago.
It could be, but spark plug issues almost always are accompanied by a check engine light and rarely clear up on their own.

is timing belt or misfiring always accompanied by check engine lights as well?
Expert:  Jared D replied 1 year ago.
If the timing belt brakes, it's catastrophic. The engine stalls and the internals are damaged. If a check engine light didn't set and the problem hasn't returned, I don't think I would worry much about it. It could have just been a hic-up that will not repeat it self. How many miles do you have?
