Customer Question

I have a 06 Hyundai sonata with the 2.4. With 170xxxx miles. Bought new. This metal like clatter tick noise started long ago. First only made noise when valve train slack was present ( slowing down slowly or gently giving it gas at cruise speeds). I do not have the cold start chain noise but however replaced the chain, sprockets, tensioner anyway with no luck. I checked all the cam lobe cup clearances and the intakes are in spec but some exhaust was around .010 .015. I am a mechanic and build all my motors. It sounds like a bad lifter in a v8. The rattle increases with speed and now it is very loud. Now it's in all arpms after engine is warm. Sounds great cold. ( thick oil i assume) .Engine does shake at idle and lacks power. No codes. Now I can here the clatter noise very very loud especially when I pass other cars and or letting off the gas. The sound bounces of other cars and bridges now.

With the high miles i would suspect a wrist pin beyond tolerance, or possibly a piston slap from too much clearance on the rings, low oil pressure from excessive clearance on the main bearings.
