Pearl and Brian, I purchased a very large, fully variable A/C and furnace from Lennox 3 years ago. The IComfort (with WIFI) panel has stopped working. They state there is known defects in it, it is now obsolete, out of warranty (the IComfort) and want to charge me $1400 for a new panel and new wiring. Not happy. I have them down to $500 Is the Lennox using proprietary connections or can I switch out to another smart controller? If I use another Lennox smart controller, and pay the $500, am I "locked" to only buying another Lennox AC when my smaller unit eventually fails (~20 years old, used for basement and 2nd floor). I really do not want to get driven into a forced, and service-poor relationship with these guys. Thank you, Chris

Contractor's Assistant: Are you getting any error codes or blinking lights on your Lennox furnace?

The smart controller showed error code 11 and 31; "cannot find outside unit", "cannot connect with outside unit"

Contractor's Assistant: How long has this been going on with your Lennox furnace? What have you tried so far?

3 days. Fully reset of A/C at breaker box inside the house, at the AC unit, at the furnace. Lennox technician has diagnosed the bad Icomfort panel.

Hope you are doing well today.Have a look at your thermostat. Does it have normal thermostat terminals? (R,Y,G,C,W)

one second, checkingThe Lennox Icomfort has red, white, blue and yellow plugged into the terminal block. It is driving a full-variable A/C unit and furnace; the Icomfort that has stopped working is the WIFI model. 3 years old, now "obsolete"

What are the terminals labeled. Sounds like you are using the icomfort comm system

you are icomfort communicating system.The short answer is you can rip it all out (including the communication module) and put a normal conventional thermostat. But you may end up having to run new wire to the thermostat from the airhandler or from the airhandler to the outside unit.You can also upgrade the comm module. But it’s expensive and honestly I wouldn’t recommend it.I hate communicating systems because they fail so often and leave you with no option than to replace expensive parts or rip it all out.Yes they are more efficient and they make the system work better but the trade off is when it fails you are basically out of luck.

With a conventional system if a thermostat fails you can jump it out and make it work while you go buy a new one. You can’t do that with a comm system

Have to love the hand-cuffs. To my original question, can I get guidance on the tradeoffs of what they are trying to sell me? For $500, and a 5 year warranty on the new controller, I don't want to make an emotional decision but a financial smart one and next be locked to them for my next purchase.

Yeah, they’re giving you two options but both are for comm systems. Which will eventually be outdated. Conventional thermostats and wiring will be around basically forever
