Customer Question
I have a rheem...

I have a rheem 43vb40E2 gas water heater. When it comes on, pilot light will light, then the burner will light, and then i hear a bit of a hissing noise and the burner goes back out. The electric water heater next to it went out and filled the pan with water, so wasn't sure if that had something to do with it

Contractor's Assistant: How long has this been going on? And how severe is the problem?

Just started today, and i have zero hot water. it wont stay lit and running

Contractor's Assistant: Do you plan on doing the work yourself?

If i can

Contractor's Assistant: Anything else we should know to help you best?

Not that i know of

Sounds like the tank has a leak and it's putting the burner out. If that's the case you need a new water heater.

the tank next to it had a leak, but this one was fine.

the pilot light lights up and burner comes on nice and strong all the way around and then it sounds like air being sucked and the gas peters out and dies
HVAC Technician: Rick, HVAC Supervisor replied 2 months ago

That's not what the hissing noise followed by the burner going out would indicate. If there's a lot of moisture in the air and the tank is cold it could be condensation not a leak but I've never heard of condensation putting out a burner. Only other possibility is a problem with the flame sensor but if you have a pilot not hot surface ignition (glow plug) then that's not at all likely

it actually sounds like the exaust fan is pulling more than can get into the combustion chamber. Its like a vaccuum seal with a slow leak...
Customer reply replied 2 months ago
its an air hissing/whistling, not a water on hot hissing
HVAC Technician: Rick, HVAC Supervisor replied 2 months ago

That not at all possible. Doesn't happen.
