I am replacing an old Emerson thermostat, but there are many wires, including 4 white wires. Why is there so many and what do I do?

Contractor's Assistant: Just to clarify, do you think this is a larger HVAC problem, or something specific to the thermostat?

I want to replace it with a digital, but there are more wires than the new one has
