I am replacing an old Weatertron thermostat on a heat pump…

Customer Question
I am replacing an...

I am replacing an old Weatertron thermostat on a heat pump with a new Honeywell wife thermostat. The User Guide for the RTH6500 has an alternate diagram on page 7 for heat pumps with different wiring labels. My old thermostat also has a wire labeled T, but no wire labeled L or F. What do I do with the "T" wire on the new thermostat?

Contractor's Assistant: Did you double-check the thermostat's settings? And what about the filters?

I am trying to wire in a new thermostat. I have not completed the wiring because I do not know if the T wire from the old thermostat should be in the L slot on the new thermostat.

Contractor's Assistant: Do you plan on doing the work yourself?

Yes

Contractor's Assistant: Anything else we should know to help you best?

No. Where does the T wire go on the new thermostat?

Hello,

The T is no longer used. It was an old style anticipator no longer used. Just tape off T and do not use. L is rarely used also and is just for a light for ana alarm sitiuation

F on really old thermostats meant FAN and now goes to G terminal.

Do you have any other issues?

I wired the thermostat without the "T" wire connected. I have registered the new Honeywell thermostat online. I can turn the fan off and auto; however, the heat pump will not turn on--neither to heat nor to cool. The thermostat will give a very light click like it is switching on, but the unit is not operating. Are you sure the the "T" wire used on the old thermostat should not be connected somewhere?
HVAC Technician: BillyHvac, Journeyman HVAC Tech replied 7 months ago

I am positive...did you program for heat pump?

What color wires did you put in what terminals?

it should have been ser for heat pump in the online setup for the Honeywell thermostat.
Wire colors: both white W and black X2 wires connected to AUX; orange O to O; green G to G; yellow Y to Y; blue B to C. The original Weathertron had no C; Honeywell alternate wiring diagram shows to connect B there. The T wire was taped and not used.
HVAC Technician: BillyHvac, Journeyman HVAC Tech replied 7 months ago

Ok we have no way of knowing if the blue is connected to a common at other end.

This thermostat MUST have a C wire connection....but if you had no C wire (B) on old then it is not hooked up at unit.

Do you have access to the indoor unit where the thermostat wires attach?
