The outside unit is not running. the thermostat said check

Customer Question

the outside unit is not running. the thermostat said check filter. system is only 8 months old
JA: Just to clarify, do you think this is a larger HVAC problem, or something specific to the thermostat?
Customer: no idea...the breaker tripped and i reset. the smaller unit for the upstairs is running
JA: Do you plan on doing the work yourself?
Customer: if its a simple fix yes
JA: Anything else we should know to help you best?
Customer: that's all i have been able to determine. there is a whole house air filter next to the ac unit in the attic

Hello,

My name is Billy. The filter reminder is just that...it knows nothing about your filter...it is just a timer that goes off after so many hours of run time. Then in the thermostat (depending on model) you just reset the "timer" and it starts counting hours again.

The fact a breaker tripped is a sign of a problem in the high voltage side....was it the furnace or ac breaker that tripped?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
ac
Expert:  BillyHvac replied 1 month ago.

Thank you.

This means there was a high amp occurrence in the outdoor unit.

Would this unit still be under warranty if only 8 months old?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Expert:  BillyHvac replied 1 month ago.

Thank you.

Do not do anything else other than resetting breaker or checking fuses....any other work could possibly void warranty.

The fact it tripped a breaker means you will need a service call to check to see what the short was.

I assume once you reset the breaker the ac outside never responded again?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
both units were off. the breaker has two toggles on each. the outside toggles on the top and bottom breaker were still on. the middle two toggles were off....when I reset it all, the small upstairs unit running. the bigger unit is not

where would i find the fuse?
Expert:  BillyHvac replied 1 month ago.

quite often there are fuses inside the disconnect box at the outdoor unit.

May be worth checking. You can also attach any pics here for me to see and direct.

It just has a pull that disconnects no fuses

Sorry I don't have a vokt meter
Expert:  BillyHvac replied 1 month ago.
