We have a 4 ton air conditioner that was installed brand new

Customer Question

We have a Bryant 4 ton air conditioner that was installed brand new about 2 years ago. In the last 2 days, it has stopped working twice and gives a system malfunction error. After about an hour, it just starts working again and the error goes away. The condenser has been cleaned. Any suggestions on what this could be?
JA: Did you double-check the thermostat's settings? And what about the filters?
Customer: Yes, the thermostat showed it was off and at 82 degrees and climbing. The filters are clean and are changed monthly.
JA: Do you plan on doing the work yourself?
Customer: No
JA: Anything else we should know to help you best?
Customer: We did have a technician come out to look at it, but he said unless the error is there, he cannot help us. Unfortunately, both times we have called for service, the error goes away before anyone gets here.

If tech could not get it to act up while he was there it is possibly a failing metering device which works sometimes and des not others. If it were refrigerant charge or something, it would be a consistent problem. A metering device can work fine and then all of a sudden malfunction. This definitely will be a warranty issue, but as he said you may have to wait until it sticks and wil not unstick before he can find it. Otherwise my inclination would be to have him start with replacing the metering device.
