My air conditioner will not come on at all not even the fan

Customer Question

My air conditioner will not come on at all not even the fan is there a reset button
JA: Did you double-check the thermostat's settings? And what about the filters?
Customer: Filters are new and turned it to fan adjusted the temp and nothing the unit is from 2009
JA: Do you plan on doing the work yourself?
Customer: If it is something simple I don't want to pay a repairman
JA: The HVAC Technician's require payment for their services. It's way less expensive on JustAnswer than face-to-face would cost.
Customer: How much is it and I am a female so keep that in mind
JA: It's only $5.
Customer: Okay can you give me some pointers on where to start
JA: Anything else we should know to help you best?
Customer: Could it be the batteries in my thermostat the light comes on and it will let me adjust it
JA: OK. Got it. I'm sending you to a secure page on JustAnswer so you can place the $5 fully-refundable deposit now. While you're filling out that form, I'll tell the HVAC Technician about your situation and then connect you two.

Is there a reset button on the outside unit
Expert:  BillyHvac replied 1 year ago.

there are 2 parts to the ac..the indoor blower and the outdoor ac unit. Where in the home is the indoor blower unit and do you have access to it?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Don't know where the blower is I changed the filters and there is nothing but a hole going down under my house
Expert:  BillyHvac replied 1 year ago.

Ok we will do a small test if your game before we get that far...can you remove the top section of the thermostat? where we can see thermostat wires?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
got it
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
The top of the thermostat is off
Expert:  BillyHvac replied 1 year ago.

now we want to take a short wire or paperclip and shape in a U

then hold one end on R terminal (may say rc or rh)

and hold the other end on G terminal.

tell me if the blower starts

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
There is an rc/0 and an rh/b and will a safety pin work
Expert:  BillyHvac replied 1 year ago.

use the Rc terminal...and yes a safety pin is fine

Customer: replied 1 year ago.

Expert:  BillyHvac replied 1 year ago.

How far are you willing to g on this? are you willing to get inside the outdoor unit?

On the unit outside or on the side of the house besides the unit is there a powwer box with a lever?

Expert:  BillyHvac replied 1 year ago.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Expert:  BillyHvac replied 1 year ago.

now follow that thick power wire to the unit. Remove the door from the section where this power cord enters. Take a pic with door off.

I will NOT ask you do anything dangerous

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Okay it looks like some of the wires have gotten really hot and melted
Expert:  BillyHvac replied 1 year ago.

you are correct....

If we are lucky the only issue is that part..called a contactor. Of course the wires would need trimmed and cleaned up. But overall this is not a real expensive fix if the other parts are ok.

BUT this is 220 volts, so caution would be paramount. Are you wanting to try and fix yourself?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I think I got it figured out the wires are not even attached they have melted through thanks for your help gonna get my so to help me thank you so much
Expert:  BillyHvac replied 1 year ago.

You are very welcome...the part can be gotten for $20...

Just make sure the breaker is off at that power box.

Thank you for your patience and help!

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Can you verify the number on the part I need I think I got it but not sure that I got the whole number
Expert:  BillyHvac replied 1 year ago.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
