If your new thermostat does not have S1 and S2 these wires will be taped off an unused. They were for remote sensors Now if you are using the thermostat with a heat pump and you would like to be able to choose what outdoor temperature the heat pump or the backup heat is locked out and not allowed to operate, you would need a thermostat with the S terminals.
