Follow the small diameter aluminum tubing connected to the gas control valve into the unit. It terminates at the pilot. That's where you put your lit match. You also need to push and hold down the dial (some gas valves have a separate button) while you light the pilot and for at least a minute after it's lit to give the thermocouple (the flame sensor in the pilot) a chance to heat up
