gas furnace & air conditioning, no heat pump - but it does have B & O wires connected.

Ok I just have to confirm, is there any other switch that you use to control the Trol-A-Temp system like a round dial switch?

No, just the thermostat, if I understand you correctly.

Ok the Trol-A-Temp system is manufactured by Honeywell, and in my opinion they make the best programmable thermostat on the market in their contractor series, I own a Honeywell Focus pro 8000 touch screen, which is compatible for the Downstairs, too pricey for the upstairs, you'll want the focus pro 6000 for that application as it will need to be a battery powers thermostat there as ther is no "Common" wire up there but the batteries last for about 18months so that is good.

Looking at the wiring guide, where would the B & O connect? Also looks like a bit of overkill for what I have.

7 is fine - but so is 5-2 or 5-1-1, maybe 2 changes per day

http://luxproducts.com/thermostats/tx9000ts.php These are more price friendly and readily availible, and are compatible with what you have. wire for wire. You just have to switch both to what you are controlling, that is heating or cooling.
