VerifiedThanks for allowing me to assist you, I am the horse's servant and will do my best to help you with your horse. the problems you describe are consistent with a horse that hasn't had consistent leadership. Often thos happens with very small horses and ponies. Kindness and gentle handling is frequently confused with fair leadership. They are not the same concept. Small ponies usually have to defend themselves in a group situation; this can be all but invisible to the average horse owner. Generally there is not a lot of kicking and biting, but body language is used to convey hierarchy and thus herd position. It seems that you have volunteered for the bottom spot on the totem pole. I recommend learning how to assert yourself as a herd leader using narural horse handling methods. Look to John Lyons, Buck Brannaman, Monty XXXXX, XXXXX Dorrance for methods and training. Your pony will be happier, you will be happier too. You are describing a stressful situation for her, as horses do not want to be the leaders, they are supposed to be herd members, you are supposed to be the leader. I truly hope this helps, she will benefit from the change.

Safety is never a bad idea. If you have a system that keeps everyone safe, then continue until you have a new plan. This pony (mini) could give you a huge gift of horse savvy and be the best thing that ever happened to your horse - human schema. I applaud your willingness to examine your handling style and make changes to better everyones situation. Enjoy the journey, and may I also recommend the movie "Buck", which is the character basis for the book you read. It is a new documentary on Buck Brannaman and worth viewing. Also books by Mark Rashid such as "Horses Never Lie" and "Considering the Horse" which are great reads and really give insight without forcing information at you.
