17 YO mare - the pockets above both eyes are puffy. One day fine, the next that symptom. wondering what that indicates, if anything.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. What is the horse's name?

Hope

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Hope?

Not really. She developed EPM at age 2 after short racing career; had 3 nice foals, been retired 10 years and in good health.

I should add that we suspect she might have a touch of Cushings - has not shed out easily the past 2 summers. No other symptoms.

Hello, this is Dr. Linda. I hope I can help with your concerns today.

What you are describing with the puffiness above both eyes is actually supraorbital ( above the eyes ) fat pad deposition. This finding & the presence of hirsutism ( not shedding out completely ), & the age of your horse, is a pretty good indication that Hope does have Cushings Disease ( Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction or PPID ). I really think she would benefit from treatment with pergolide. Diagnostic tests would be helpful to confirm, but between the hirsutism & bulging fat pads, this highly correlates with PPID.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns.

Thank you.

Thanks very much. We weren't sure what it might correlate to. Will proceed with our local vet.

Hi Dr. Linda,
didn't realize I had a message here. My horse is doing fine, the fat pads over her eyes have gone down almost entirely.
Thank you for following up. I do not expect to need anything additional; if I do, I'll contact my local vet. Thanks very much for your help and diagnosis. - Jayne
