My Morgan horse has...

My Morgan horse has not been wormed in a very long time. I noticed his coat is long and he is drinking a lot of water (he uses his salt lick a lot.) I am filling his heated water bucket every two days. Cushing's or a worm problem?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. There are all sorts of infestations the horse can pick up. I'll have you talk to the Veterinarian who'll sort out what is wrong and help you decide what to do about it. What is the horse's name?

Teddy

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Teddy?

Just that he is the greatest horse on earth...oh, he is chewing the barn down.

Good Evening:

Thanks for your question. I can understand your concern with Teddy. Normally, when a horse has a large worm burden, some of the major signs are weight loss and lethargy. From your description, I would be concerned about Cushing's disease, as he is showing two of the major signs of the disease, that being an exceedingly long hair coat (hirsuitism), and drinking lots of water (polydypsia). Neither of those are a sign of worms. As far as the chewing, that is not associated with either of the problems. That is sometimes attributed to boredom or cribbing (wind-sucking), and can develop into a habit.

I would recommend that you have Teddy tested for Cushing's. It would be good to have the testing done earlier rather than later, as Cushing's can also lead to founder and other chronic lameness problems, to name a few.

I trust I've been of some help, but please don't hesitate to ask any further question. I will be offline for the remainder of the evening, but if you have questions, I will get back to you first thing in the morning.

Thanks again,

-Dan C., DVM
