My donkey is 3 years old, he lives here with his 6-7 year…

Customer Question
My donkey is 3...

My donkey is 3 years old, he lives here with his 6-7 year old mother as a bonded pair. On Friday night he had slid down an icy embankment and got pinned under the bottom wire of a fence, meaning he could not stand up. He has damaged his eye, and has been given antibiotic gel and anti-inflammitory injections, plus pen-strep for 3 days. My worry is, he spent a whole night lying on frozen ice and since then, he has not been able to stand. The vet advised feeding as much hard feed as he can manage. He was moved by tractor into a barn, his mother is close by, we have been massaging his legs and turning him evey hour or so, trying to prevent pressure sores. He is still not standing. We have devised a hammock type sling, and a support frame, and today will try and suspend him, so he is at least upright. I think the hours on the ice, pinned under the fence, have stressed him out coupled with the vet constantly trying to make him stand the first day have traumatised him so much, I don't know if he will recover. What more can we do? My worry now is that the constant feeding of hard food (coarse mix) has built up toxins in his body, coupled with the inactivity and prescribed equipalazone (1 sachet per day) will be too much for his kidneys and liver to cope with. I do not have any confidence in my vet, I feel he is treating my donkey as a small horse and not a donkey. Is there anything else we can do?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about your donkey?

He is still eating and drinking, but showing no sign of being able to weight bear with his legs. The vet carried out a worm count, and it was not high, he has taken other blood samples but they were inconclusive.
