Customer Question

My horse just sucked down a paper towel I had in my hand along with carrots and apples. Thinking about how I can encourage its safe passage. Any suggestions?

Hello I am an internal medicine specialist and I would be happy to help. Not to worry. Although paper towels are not an ideal snack, they will do no harm to your horse. They are no harder to digest than straw, and horses are very good at digesting roughage! You ask a great question but Jessie will be just fine! Please let me know if you have any further questions!

Hi there, thanks for the question. Let me see if I can help. If Jessie only ate a couple of sheets of paper towel , then there is nothing to worry about. The paper product will easily break down in the GI tract and will not cause any problems. Even the paper towel roll of cardboard if she chewed it up would probably pass though just fine. Horses are designed to break down some pretty tough forage....paper towel shouldn't pose any concerns. Feed her as normal today and encourage water intake. I hope this helps. Best of luck.
