Customer: My mare has cycled 3 times in the past month and I went for a trail ride with her and a gelding the other day and she was fine during the ride, however, after the ride I loaded her on the trailer to go home and she kicked in the trailer and wouldn't stop. I had to pull over and walk her out to try to calm her down. She looked tucked up and I was worried she might get a colic on so I called the vet to come out (miles away) and he sedated her and gave her Banamine and a shot of Progesterone. After being sedated we put her back on the trailer to come home and she bucked and kicked all the way home. She is still in heat today after getting the shot last Friday and she is still kicking out. Her stomach muscles are very tight. On Friday as I walked her she would stop and kick out as if to have cramping. Since then she is still kicking out, squirting and rubbing her rear end. I was wondering if I should have an ultrasound done to check for cysts or something else.Would you suggest Regimate?

Absolutely get her ovaries palpated and ultrasounded. Specifically I'd want to rule out a granulosa cell tumor.

My mare has finally gone out of heat after getting a shot last Friday to
stop it. As of yesterday she was still squirting and kicking out.
Now, this all started on Friday the 11th when she went into heat on the way
back from a trail ride. She went crazy in the trailer bucking and kicking for a
half hour straight all the way home, even after getting sedated.
I had the vet out this past Friday and he did an ultrasound and her
follicles were large. He said that she should have a Caslick's procedure that
she is sucking air.
Well, the heat symptoms stopped yesterday but she is still kicking out. Now
I am not sure if she has irritation in the uterus or somewhere in there and is
still in pain or she is still sucking wind to cause this. I don't know if the
Caslick's is going to work on the kicking out. I would suppose that if the wind
sucking is causing the irritation then it should work to stop any future
irratation. I am just concerned that the kicking out is another issue and that
she may have a procedure that is not really nessesary or won't work.
Should I have blood drawn to see if there is something else going on? Could
it possibly be a neurological disorder? The kicking out is dangerous and she
could injure herself more or hurt whoever is around her.
Thank You
The only neurologic disorder that comes to mind would be a peripheral neuropathy such as that due to Lyme Borreliosis.

I'd recommend rechecking the ovaries to ensure all follicles have regressed, and if so, go ahead with the Caslicks. Pneunovagina can make some mares VERY uncomfortable, which is why it's commonly done on TB, STB, and QH racing fillies, and many barrel racing mares.
