Question regarding wound care. My horse has open wounds directly under the knee, it appears to be from going down on her

Expert's Assistant chatimg
Customer: Hello, Question regarding wound care. My horse has open wounds directly under the knee, it appears to be from going down on her knees to try to reach hay morsels through her paddock area......I fixed the problem so she can't continue to forge for food in this manner.....question...the wounds are still raw and open.....should I medicate and wrap or medicate and leave unwapped. also, what is the best medication to use on the wounds? I have been told by several owners that Vetericyn is like a wonder drug for wounds and was wondering if I should use this.....there is also another product well horse .....are either of these acceptable or should I use something else?
Thank you
Pam

Hi, I'm Dr. Crow. I would recommend wrapping and any antibiotic ointment. I prefer Furacin/Furazone, but I know a lot of clients really like vetericyn. It may also help to use hydrotherapy (water pressure with a hose) 10-15 minutes a day before wrapping to stimulate healing and clean off dead skin.

Thank you. XXXXX or Furacin a prescription medication? If so, is there some type of antiobiotic that I can purchase over the counter? Also, how long do I continue to wrap, until there is a scab present? My concern is that even with a scab it will need to remain moist otherwise the scab could tear and the wounds become raw again....a perpetual problem.......
