Hi, I'm Dr. Crow. Many things can cause intermittent abdominal pain (colic), especially in an older horse. Most commonly, we find that gastric ulcers can cause a horse to colic occasionally. Ulcers are diagnosed by endoscopy. However, there are many medications and supplements out there for ulcers and many people simply opt to treat. The easiest supplement is aloe vera liquid (from grocery store) at 20cc 1-2x/day. There are many OTC ulcer supplements that work well, like U-Gard and Succeed. The best treatment for ulcers is Gastrogard, but this can be very expensive.
