Customer: We have a 21 year old horse, He is under weight due to needing his teeth floated ( we just discovered ). He was fine at his morning feeding then within 2 hours he was down. My husband saw him rolling but thought it looked normal. Shortly after we discovered him laying down and he wouldn't get up. He has thicker saliva coming from his mouth and now some mucus is showing from his nose. We suspected colic, but he hadn't eaten all of his food and he has now urinated and had a bowel movement. We are trying to get him to walk to no avail. He wants to lay back down but we're afraid we won't be able to get him up. We are in the woods and there is somewhat of a wind break. We would like to get him in the barn. We have called our Vet and he hasn't responded yet. Is there anything we can administer ourselves. We have Penicillin and Tallon (sp) for our other animals were looking for other stuff. We also use Homeopathic remedies on some of our animals if anyone has knowledge of that.

horsevet1976 :

Hi, I'm Dr. Crow and it sounds like he is choking, possibly colicking as well. I would get a vet out immediately to tube him. In the meantime, you can massage his throat to see if that helps. If he is laying down, that is okay.

We no longer believe that it is simply colic. He does moan and has shallow breathes, he is cold. We were trying to get him into the barn but cannot get him to walk. We feel like it is a cold or upper respiratory but he does tend to turn back to his abdomen like it hurts. So there is the symptoms are confusing. Can you comment on using Penicillin and increasing the first 2 doses. We are use to giving our animals injections just wondering your opinion on the anount

horsevet1976 :

For a 1000 lb horse, give 30mL Penicilin 2x/day for 3-5 days. Can you take his temperature? His symptoms are making me think he could have a severe colic with a possible strangulation or rupture. Being cold with shallow breaths is a sign of shock. Fluid from the nose and mouth could be reflux from the GI tract.

Vet is still not calling back. I agree with you . The Largest syringe I have right now is 20ml. What are our options if your right ? Anything we can do ?

horsevet1976 :

You can try some Penicillin and reuse the syringe for the other 10mL. However, if he is in shock, he will die very soon or need to be put down. Unfortunately, there is not much you can do at this point. I hope this is not the case.

<span class="JA_chatAuthorName"Customer:

ok, we have now given him 22ml of penicillin. We're basing it on about 800lbs. Can give another injection if you think it would benefit.

<span class="JA_chatAuthorName"Customer:

oops. He seems to be warmer, we have blankets on him, and he is coherent. He isn't shaking as much and the mucus has slowed down. Any suggestions on keeping him hydrated ? He took the shot like a trooper. He tried to even stand up at one point. As soon as he does, we will take him to the barn. Thank you for your help. We just wait and pray at this point.
