Customer: Have a 5 year QH old about 1000lb mare that was cut sometime yesterday from the knee almost to pastern. Very swollen and she is not wanting to put weight on it. Does not look extremely deep (I have seen worse) but like there is a lot of trauma. Have penicillin, gentamicin and banamine. Should banamine be given IV or IM and which antibiotic would work best?

Hi, I'm Dr. Crow. Banamine is best given IV or you can squirt it in her mouth. It is risky giving it IV because you could hit the carotid artery, so I recommend by mouth. Penicillin is the best antibiotic for this, 30cc IM 2x/day. If the wound communicates with the joint or tendon sheath, this can be fatal, so having a vet out is best to see if the synovial structure needs flushing. Hydrotherapy, topical antibiotic ointment, and a wrap would also be good. Also, monitor her temp.
