Does a 15 year old Palomino mare need her hocks injected ? They've never been done, and our trainer is suggesting that it would make her much smoother. What do you think ?

We just got her for my 11 year old daughter, and we were wondering what else we might need to do for her ? Omega3, Gold As Sun, and a daily dewormer - was suggested. But our stable really does not suggest all these things. They'll do them, but they prefer not to. Do you also suggest these and/or what do you suggest to make sure that we keep her healthy like she is!!

And lastly, she has good papers and registered Quarterhorse AND Palomino, and she's had babies in the past. How much longer can your breed her and would you breed her to an Oldenburg ? ( Ubilee II - http://brevardec.com/sales.html - we can purchase his for a reasonable price. )

I look forward to your answers!! THANK YOU !!!

What discipline is Irish training in?

At what level?

Specifically, what are the trainer's concerns that might indicate the need for injections?

How long ago was her last foal?

Have you had a chance to evaluate her previous offspring?

Looking forward to your reply,

Hunter / Jumper

Beginner Level

My daughter's trainer is high level Dressage Competition winner and does some jumping shows. Mostly though Dressage for the past 10+ years.

Her last foal was 2-1/2 years ago.

We have not had a chance to evaluate her previous offspring.

Thanks for following!!
A 15 year old beginner H/J horse usually won't need hock injections, but if you plan to keep her for some time as your daughter progresses, it might be worth having your veterinarian check out her motion. Until I get a "feel" for these individuals, I'll usually do flexion tests and watch them on a longe, and sometimes observing them under saddle. Hock injections can be beneficial, but should not be done unless there's a clear need.

At the age of 15, you'll want to breed her in the next few years, as each year they spend "open" diminishes their ability to carry a pregnancy to term. Ubilee II has a good pedigree, I have numerous Opus offspring as patients, but you may want to inquire into the reason for gelding him.

She said that she made him a gelding because his focus was not as good in shows. Ever since doing it, he's been great!! She also prefers geldings to stallions any day!! Also prefers geldings over mares!! She feels like they do their job better!!

Thanks for your answers!! I will accept your answer so that they release your payment!!!
One of the things I tell my clients is that inside every really nice stallion.... is an even better gelding.
