Our 11.2, 15 yr old, Welsh Sec A (& slightly overweight!),

Customer Question
pony was diagnosed last Tuesday...
Our 11.2, 15 yr old, Welsh Sec A (& slightly overweight!), pony was diagnosed last Tuesday with a cancerous tumour on his Penis. We have been told that the option is an amputation of part of his penis. We believe it is the early stages of the cancer & that it should only be an amputation of 2/3". What is the likely prognosis of this surgery? I have heard some real horror stories this weekend of infections setting in & urethas closing up after reconstruction, & not many positive comments. If he was left to let nature take its course what could his life expectancy be? Or if we go for the surgery is there a % chance he would have. We certainly don't want to put him through traumatic surgery if there is a highly likely chance he wont make it. I would appreciate any advice you could pass on. Thanks Catherine

If this has been caught early, his changes are very good.
The surgery is somewhat traumatic, but not any more than a colic surgery, and your horse is fairly young.
I would encourage you to pursue it.
Hope this helps, let me know if you have any further questions
