If your air conditioning is not blowing cold air or not blowing as cold as it once did, there can be a few different things that can cause this. It could be anything from restrictions in the system to your blend air door vents not working properly. The most common cause we see is low freon. You can start the engine and look to see if your compressor is coming on. If the freon is low, the computer will not turn on the compressor. This is to prevent damage to the compressor and the components. This is very common. If the compressor is cycling on and off, then the system is just slightly low on freon. This will cause the AC to work, but poorly. Look for moisture around the outside of the AC fittings. This will indicate a leak. If no moisture is detected, you might just be able to get away with recharge. However, this needs to be done using an AC machine. The system first needs to be evacuated down to nothing. Then the system needs to be out into a vacuum to get the moisture out and to ensure it holds. Then ones it passes these tests, it can be recharged using the AC machine with the proper amount of freon with a scale. Short of using an AC machine, you would not be doing it right. Using a can of freon you can get at your local auto parts store is not the best route and can cause damage to the system.
If in fact the Freon is full and the AC compressor still is not coming on this would indicate an electrical issue that needs to be diagnosed. For example this could be a faulty sensor, switch, faulty AC compressor, relay, fuse block or even the wiring in the AC system. Every once in a while these AC pressure sensors/switches can go bad causing this issue. You can look for these sensors near the AC compressor and or the filter dryer and replace as needed. Of course, be sure all of the fuses on board the vehicle check out good. If you need to, be sure to check for power to the AC compressor and check the AC relay and operation to determine what is going on if there is no power to the compressor. If the relay is not activating, you can check the inputs to the relay to see what is missing. It will likely need two powers and one ground to operate. You can check the inputs using a test light or a voltmeter.
