Customer Question
My AC compressor clutch...

My AC compressor clutch will not engage. When i turn on the AC button both fans go off and the motor loads up slightly.

Mechanic's Assistant: Has the clutch been slipping? Are you having any trouble shifting?

2000 Honda Accord EX 4 cyl

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Accord yourself? What have you tried so far?

Its the AC clutch on the compressor

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

I had a shop change out the compressor and he couldn't figure it out. He said to take it to the dealer to run a scan on the computer. He could jump the relay to make it come on.

Hello my name is***** am a Master Technician and I am glad to help you. I am reviewing your question now, and will reply shortly.

Ask Your Own Honda Question
Mechanic for Honda: Dan, ASE Master Technician replied 2 months ago

Jumping the relay tells me that the wiring and the compressor clutch are both ok. Check the AC fuse under the hood.

Your refrigerant system could be low on charge, that would cause this problem. That could be due to a leak in the system. AC dye is added to the compressor oil and a UV light is used to find the leak. You could also have a faulty low or high pressure switch. A faulty pressure switch could cause your issue as well. You could try jumping the switches to see if the compressor kicks on. That would verify the problem.

Please let me know if you have any more questions.

We jumped the high pressure switch and it did not come on. When it was in the shop they charged it up fully while they had the clutch working. No leaks. Bearing in clutch went out to cause us to replace the compressor to begin with.
Customer reply replied 2 months ago
It blows cold when clutch is engaged. Is both fans supposed to go off when ac is initiated? Every where I read they are supposed to come on when ac us turned on.
Customer reply replied 2 months ago
The only way we can get it on is to jump it from the compressor to the battery.
Mechanic for Honda: Dan, ASE Master Technician replied 2 months ago

Try removing the relay and jumping to verify the wiring is good from the relay to the compressor.

Fans are supposed to be on when AC is on.

Ask Your Own Honda Question
Customer reply replied 2 months ago
How do you do that?
Mechanic for Honda: Dan, ASE Master Technician replied 2 months ago

Turn ac on, with engine running. Remove and install AC relay. Do you hear it click?

Ask Your Own Honda Question
Customer reply replied 2 months ago
Will try that. We’ve swapped the fan relay and the clutch relay.
Mechanic for Honda: Dan, ASE Master Technician replied 2 months ago

Mechanic for Honda: Dan, ASE Master Technician replied 2 months ago

Remove relay, turn ac on, check for power at the 4 pins with the relay removed. You should have voltage at 2 of the 4 pins.

Ask Your Own Honda Question
Customer reply replied 2 months ago
Ok will check that too
Mechanic for Honda: Dan, ASE Master Technician replied 2 months ago

Have you checked the AC fuse?

Ask Your Own Honda Question
Customer reply replied 2 months ago
checked all fuses. Just baffles me why the fans are running and when ac is turned in the fans stop
Mechanic for Honda: Dan, ASE Master Technician replied 2 months ago

Is the engine at operating temp when the fans are on?

Ask Your Own Honda Question
Customer reply replied 2 months ago
I think so will check that tomorrow too
Mechanic for Honda: Dan, ASE Master Technician replied 2 months ago

ok

Ask Your Own Honda Question
Customer reply replied 2 months ago
With engine running at operating temp with relay removed we have power on two legs. With ac off there is power on three of those legs.
Mechanic for Honda: Dan, ASE Master Technician replied 2 months ago

Does the relay click when installing?

Ask Your Own Honda Question
Customer reply replied 2 months ago
No
Customer reply replied 2 months ago
There r three identical relays we have swapped them all around and nothing clicks.
Mechanic for Honda: Dan, ASE Master Technician replied 2 months ago

I DO..... IF COMPRESSOR CLUTCH DOES NOT ENGAGE DO YOU KNOW HOW TO CK IT FOR POWER AND GROUND?

COMPRESSOR CLUTCH NOT ENGAGING? YOU TESTED CIRCUIT FOR POWER AND GROUND WHERE? HOW? WHAT WAS RESULTS? PLEASE ANSWER EACH QUESTION

Ask Your Own Honda Question
Customer reply replied 2 months ago
Not engaging. In the plug in on the compressor by jumping the pos to the battery. The clutch engaged and ac worked well.
Mechanic for Honda: eric remington,
 replied 2 months ago

OK SO YOU ARE NOT RECEIVING POWER TO COMPRESSOR CLUTCH, GROUND IS GOOD AND AC SYSTEM WORKS, INCLUDING FANS? WHEN COMPRESSOR ENGAGES BY JUMPING? WHAT ARE PRESSURES? WHEN YOU SAY AC WORKED WELL...DOES THAT MEAN THAT GAUGE READINGS WERE 30 ON LOW SIDE 175 HIGH SIDE BOTH FANS CAME ON RADIATOR AND CONDENSER AND THAT VENT TEMPERATURES WERE AT LEAST 40 DEGREES?

Ask Your Own Honda Question
Mechanic for Honda: eric remington,
 replied 2 months ago

I KNOW IM SOUNDING PICKY BUT COMPRESSOR WIL NOT KICK ON IF PRESSURE ARE EVEN MARGINALLY LOW SO I HAVE TO PROBE U. DONT MEAN TO BE INSULTING DEMEANING BUT IN ORDER TO DIAGNOSE I NEED CRYSTAL ACCURATE INFO

Ask Your Own Honda Question
Mechanic for Honda: eric remington,
 replied 2 months ago

THE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO TURN OFF COMPRESSOR AT EVEN MARGINALLY LOW PRESSURES SO THAT COMPRESSOR DOES NOT GET DESTROYED THRU A LACK OF LUBRICATION

DO YOU HAVE ANY GAUGE OR GAUGES

Ask Your Own Honda Question
Mechanic for Honda: eric remington,

I MEAN IF LOW SUCTION HOSE IS ICE COLD AND BOTH FANS ARE ON THEN OK MORE THAN LIKELY YOU HAVE ENOUGH FREON IN SYSTEM....LET ME KNOW

Ask Your Own Honda Question
Customer reply replied 2 months ago
Didn’t have the gauges on the ac. When I say worked good I mean blows super cold air. I understand what you’re doing. If you read the previous posts. The shop the put the compressor on jumped it and charged it up. Because the clutch would not work. To rule out the compressor being bad. They checked it all out and now we are doing the same thing. The shop says that it’s a computer problem not telling the elays to kick on. Is there a way to check that?
Customer reply replied 2 months ago
We do have guages
Customer reply replied 2 months ago
But when the shop had the guages on charging it up don’t you think if it would have been low they would have known?
Mechanic for Honda: eric remington,
 replied 2 months ago

I ALWAYS ASSUME EVERYONE IS AN IDIOT CAUSE 1. IM NOT THERE AND 2 I DONT KNOW IF IM GETTING ACCURATE INFO...IVE BEEN TOLD B4 OH I GUESS THEY DIDNTO DO THAT. OK WELL IF YOU YOURSELF FELT IT GETTING SUPER COLD AND FANS CAME ON THEN IT PROBABLY HAS ENOUGH FREON....

Ask Your Own Honda Question
Customer reply replied 2 months ago
When we jumped it to make the compressor come on I felt the cold air. The thing that has me baffled is that when you power up the ac from inside the clutch does not engage but it turns both fans off immediately.
Mechanic for Honda: eric remington,
 replied 2 months ago

THE ONLY WAY TO CK IT IS WITH A SCHEMATIC....ARE YOU WILLING TO PERFORM TESTING AT MY LEAD? THEN 1. WE NEED VIN NUMBER SO THAT I CAN GET FACTORY SCHEMATIC AND DATA 2 WE WILL NEED TO PERFORM TESTING BOTH TEXTING AND PHONE CALL 3. PHONE CALLWILL COVER 2 HOURS WORTH OF TIME. THE PLAN WOULD BE TO TRACE WIRING FROM COMPRESSOR BACK TO SWITCH AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN AS NECESSARY

Mechanic for Honda: eric remington,

it could be a switch or wiring issue or relay..probably a switch...

Ask Your Own Honda Question
Customer reply replied 2 months ago
All test passed on pressure switch. Changed the relay. Can’t find a wiring issue that’s why it’s going to the dealer in the morning.
Customer reply replied 2 months ago
Thinking it’s in the computer.
Mechanic for Honda: eric remington,
 replied 2 months ago

the fact that idle goes up when you hit switch means that the main switch is ok. but other switches exist...they need to be tested..it wasn't a relay cause you tried that..wiring issues are rare...tracing down wiring not for everyone I guess...computer is receiving signal so it idles up computer issues on these cars rare but possible..which switch low? high? did you try?

the dealer said that the control panel had to be changed before they could proceed with any other fix. The control panel was shorting out and making the fans run out of sequence.
