The transmission does not want to shift. it stays in the same gear .also it would not go into reverse until I shut the motor off and restarted.

Customer: rebuilt about 40000 miles ago . and no on the brake switch. how do I check it?

Ok, the shifter moves normally, it just slips/neutrals when put in reverse. It goes into the drive range ok but stays in one gear? No warning lights on. Full of trans fluid?
