my automatic honda civic will not shift out of first. what could be the problem
Do you have a check engine light on?
Customer: replied 6 years ago.
nope. no lights came on and is running fine besides not shifting
And you're sure it's first gear? Have you tried to manually shift it ?
Customer: replied 6 years ago.
i dont know how to manually shift it. my brother was driving and said the rpms get up but it wont go over 20-25 miles per hour.
Manually shifting means to pull the stick back past Drive to L and then as the car gets up in speed move the shifter up into Drive. If it will manually shift up then it could mean an electrical fault is keeping it from shifting, but I am afraid it may have a valve inside the transmission stuck that is keeping it from shifting. If it will shift up manually you can drive it to a trans shop. If it will not shift up you should have it towed to avoid doing engine damage. Either way I would have it looked at ASAP to prevent more damage from occurring.
