THe CEL is on when the engine is cranking. Do you want me to not crank and see if it goes out?
Mechanic for Honda: MASTER TECH, Honda Technician replied 8 years ago

yes just turn the key on and see if it goes out.

when you checked the fuel pressure at the rail did you loosen the fuel line ?

did this dribble out or gush out with a lot of pressure

Ask Your Own Honda Question
Customer reply replied 8 years ago

I checked the CEL just now. Yes it does go out (3-5 sec)

Fuel gushed out when I loostened the end cap on the fuel rail.

Mechanic for Honda: MASTER TECH, Honda Technician replied 8 years ago

ok

you have spark at the plug wires ?

Ask Your Own Honda Question
Customer reply replied 8 years ago

Intermittant spark.

I took a plug and wire connected to the coil tower and ground. Bright white spark repeating at 1 per sec. I checked for spark at plug #1 - hit or miss,

Decided to replace cap, rotor, plugs, wires, tested again, same result, checked codes,

no codes.

Mechanic for Honda: MASTER TECH, Honda Technician replied 8 years ago

ok lets start with this test.

this will tell you if the coil or icm is bad.

Engine Won't Start? Check

Coil & ICM

On models with single-coil ignition systems, if the

engine cranks but there's no spark at the plugs, check the

ignition coil and the ICM (ignition control module

[igniter]) by using this procedure:

NOTE: Wire colors for wires referenced here can vary

between models, so use the appropriate ETM to ID them.

1. Turn the ignition switch ON (II), and watch the MIL

(malfunction indicator lamp).

  • If the MIL doesn't come on, or it comes on and

stays on, refer to MIL Basics on this page.

  • If the MIL comes on for two seconds and then goes

off, go to step 2.

2. Check for battery voltage at the positive wire going

to the coil, and at the positive wire going to the ICM.

  • If you have battery voltage, go to step 3.
  • If you don't have battery voltage, check for an

open between the ignition switch, the ICM, and the

coil.

3. Connect a voltmeter between the coil negative terminal

and ground, and record the cranking voltage two ways:

first with the wire between the coil and ICM connected,

then with it disconnected.

  • If you get about 8 V with the wire connected and

10 V with it disconnected, install a new coil, and

retest.

  • If you get about 10 V with the wire connected and

disconnected, install a new ICM, and retest.

Ask Your Own Honda Question
Customer reply replied 8 years ago

I followed your procedure.

CEL on for 2 then off. GoTo #2

Batt voltage at coil.

Batt volt at ICM

Meter coil neg to ground, ICM connected Batt voltage,

Disconnect wire to ICM

Same result.

Question: does "record cranking voltage" mean with key on or

with starter cranking?

Is there a checkout for ICM vs bad distributor?

Mechanic for Honda: MASTER TECH, Honda Technician replied 8 years ago
their is a test for the tdc cyl sensor in the sub assembly.

this is while cranking.
Ask Your Own Honda Question
Customer reply replied 8 years ago

I will recheck with it cranking.

Result is 10 to 11 volts on both tests.

I'm reluctant to buy the module if the distributor is bad. (the module comes with a new distributor) Can I rule out anything else (other tests to be sure its the ICM?

Mechanic for Honda: MASTER TECH, Honda Technician replied 8 years ago
if the test results show a bad icm then replace it.
or if you want to buy a whole distributor then this is your choice.
i personally would just but the failed part
