I have been told the motor is locked up. What causes this

What happened to it? What started all this?

not sure had loaned the car to someone and they said, it would not start and trying to find out where I need to go from here and if it is locked up what could have caused it to lock up

Okay to see if it's truely locked up you need to get a socket that fits the crank bolt( I think it's a 17 or 19mm) and see if the crank will turn at all. If not the the engine is locked up. If it doesn turn then you probably have a bad starter.

Usually an engine will lock up if a crank rod breaks, the head gasket fails and the cylinders fill with water (if the car overheated) or it runs out of oil and seizes.
