Final Project Requirements – Plan and Design


Your final project will be to analyze, design, and document a simple program that utilizes a good design process and incorporates sequential, selection and repetitive programming statements as well as at least one call to a function (either library or user-defined) and the use of at least one array. The specific problem you are to solve for the final project is to design a program with the following performance requirement:

The program shall allow a user to input a list of the members of a family, along with their ages and the states wherein they reside. The program shall determine and print the average age of the members of the family Next, the program shall print the names of any family members who live in Washington.


The program shall accommodate families of from 1 up to at least 10 members. The program shall detect, and deal appropriately with, (a) an age entry that is anything other than a non-negative integer, and (b) an attempt by the user to enter more family members than the program is designed to accommodate.



Final Project Deliverables

There are two deliverables for this project: Phase 1, the Project Plan, and Phase 2, Design with Test Cases, which is due the last day of the term. There will be no extensions approved on the due date for the second phase.

The Project Plan counts for 10% of your final grade. The Design with Test Cases counts for 20% of your final grade.

Requirements for Phase 1, your Project Plan



Your Project Plan must consist of two sections: Problem Analysis, and Preliminary Design. All sections and subsections must be clearly identified with appropriate headers.



Problem Analysis: Include the following subsections:

What are the required outputs?
What are the necessary inputs?
How will you obtain the required outputs from the given inputs?
A preliminary list of variables your program will use, specifying the name, usage, and data type of each variable. Present this information in the form of a table. This preliminary list must include all variables associated with inputs or outputs and any temporary variables that you can identify at this point. (Note: In your final design, you will probably identify additional variables.)
Describe the necessary formulas.
Provide a sample calculation.



Preliminary Design: Provide a preliminary design for the program. Include the following sub sections.

Identify and describe the fundamental tasks needed to solve the problem so you can use a modular design.
Provide a hierarchy chart shown the structure of the program.
An explanation of where and how you plan to use each of (1) conditional statements (2) repetition (loops), (3) arrays, and (4) functions. You must plan for at least one of each.



Note: For meeting the functions requirement, using one or more of the library functions described in the Pseudocode Demo is permitted and in fact recommended. You need not write code for a user-defined function.

Requirements for Phase 2, Design with Test Cases Requirements



Repeat the information from your plan, edited to address issues identified in your instructor’s review of your plan. You may make other changes to your plan at this time, such as additional variables that were not identified in Phase 1. Your design should be consistent with your revised plan.



Provide a flowchart for the data acquisition module.



Provide complete pseudocode, with appropriate and adequate comments. Your pseudocode must be structurally sound (that is, pass all the tests in the Pseudocode Checklist. Your pseudocode must also be correct; that is, if it were to be translated into some appropriate programming language and compiled and run, it would likely work correctly.



Provide at least three complete test cases, including both inputs and expected outputs.



Further Guidance:You should NOT deviate from the project specification by adding inputs, outputs, or features beyond those described herein. You will not receive any credit for such additions, and they will just add to your workload with zero benefit.
