Hi Joslin, here is what we have so far..
Let me know of any questions.
I will be adding the cites, references at the end.
Ethics refers to the policy and regulations that have been established by the leadership within a societal governing authority. These regulations are designed to give structure and guidance to deciding the standard for judging conduct as being permissible or unacceptable.
Nature of Ethics and its Role in Policing
The nature of ethics and their role are setting up the legality and then enforcing the practice of policing through faith in the policies and regulations. The goal is devise a standard by which society can recognize legal and unethical behaviors and live accordingly on the side of legality. The job of policing is to gain the trust of the citizens in the community by adhering and enforcing ethical actions and responses for those who break the law. The role of ethics in the relationship of policing in the community determines how successful the department will be in protecting citizens, their rights, and property.
There are certain indicators that are apart of the role or relationship between the police and the community. The priorities of the police department should mirror what the community considers important in order for the department to gain their trust. For example if the community is concerned about robberies that are happening too frequently, the police should have a plan to increase patrolling areas that are potentially targets for this type of crime. The ethical policy and regulations relating to robbery and protecting citizens should be enforced. Another indicator is competency, did the police effectively do the job. Did the number of robberies drop in the community over a comparable period of time. Were the police trustworthy to follow through and complete more patrols that resulted in apprehending criminals and stopping the increase of crime in the area. Can the community depend on the police to respond quickly and appropriately to a 911 reporting a robbery or related incident. If the answer is yes, then the community will respond by showing their respect for the police force and respond favorably in relationship with the department.
