Robbery and extortion are often confused. Please differentiate

This answer was rated:

Robbery and extortion are often confused. Please differentiate and explain the two crimes.

Robbery is the crime of forcibly taking money or property from another through direct intimidation and/or the threat of or actions of violence. Armed robbery, aggregated robbery, and mugging are specific examples of this crime. Extortion is an act of obtaining money or property from another by means of coercion. Making a threat of violence to be inflicted if the victim does not surrender money or property at some point is extortion. Similarly, promising protection from harm or refraining from violence in return for payment constitutes extortion. Such coercion is, in itself, considered extortion, whether of not money or property are actually obtained.

Hope this helps!
