Let's draw a picture of this east-west block arrangement. A=Alan, M=Myra, P=Paul, J=Joyce, S=School, and "X" is a block where none of the named kids live. Assume the school only occupies one block!

To the right is east, and to the left is west, as is the convention for maps where north is "up".

So here's where they live, starting with a bunch of X's to the east and west of the school, and marking each block with each kid's initials:


So from Paul to Myra's house is three blocks.
