In writing To Kill a Mockingbird in 1960 Harper Lee was among the first to ask questions about the failure of the American legal system to provide justice for all. Webster’s dictionary says that “justice” is “the quality of being just, impartial, or fair,” as well as “conformity to truth, fact, or reason.” Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird is full of truth, but justice, as we are taught it by our legal system, does not appear to rely on truth in the book. Instead, To Kill a Mockingbird clearly shows the kind of world man’s reason helps form into fact. Justice in the courtroom of To Kill a Mockingbird is not just or fair. Yet, the truth of the story and the character of Atticus Finch educate the reader about the fact that right, wrong, belief, fact, and justice are all subjective and enough people with a certain vision of what justice is must speak their beliefs in order for justice for all to become the objective standard.

The story begins with a description of the heat of the south that makes those who don’t live there want to ask “how do they stand it?” They do, however, and as Scout tells the reader, their lives are full of fun, tradition, and love. Scout’s hometown is a place where neighbors help each other and where children are taught right from wrong. A town where good people work hard and when they don’t have the money to buy goods or services, they provide food or products to repay those who have helped them. It is a town where everyone knows each other and knows the history of each other’s families. People take pride in their town and each other.

This picture of a lovely town, however, is disturbed when XXXXX XXXXX is accused of rape. The book reveals that as a black man XXXXX XXXXX has a slim chance at surviving such an accusation. In fact, the only lawyer in town who will defend him honestly is Atticus Finch. Mr. Finch takes the case because he believes that in America all are innocent until proven guilty. Mr. Finch knows Mr. Robinson and knows his accuser. Mr. Finch is aware of what the facts truly are in the accusation made against XXXXX XXXXX, and that the town is against his taking up the case, but he continues on his mission.

For Mr. Finch, justice is doing the objectively right thing. When an innocent man is accused of a crime a lawyer should defend him, so Mr. Finch does. He undergoes threats and attacks but he does not waiver. In the courtroom Mr. Finch proves that it was physically impossible for XXXXX XXXXX to have raped Mayella Ewell, but the all white jury convicts him anyway. In that way, winning or losing was not justice, but honoring the truth was justice. That is what Mr. Finch did. Although he hoped the jury would honor the truth, his actions alone provided the only justice XXXXX XXXXX was to receive.

The justice may have been small and XXXXX XXXXX may not have survived his ordeal, but sometimes taking one small step toward justice makes a big change. In To Kill a Mockingbird Atticus Finch takes that small step and in the end he manages to change his town, if only a little bit. Although he does not free XXXXX XXXXX, the all white jury at least does take time to consider their verdict. That is a big step in the right direction. Although the town does not put aside its racism, Atticus gets the town to consider that it may be acting incorrectly. That is the first step in getting justice for all.
