Question

I have a 4 yr old male child who is displaying symptoms of croop ( almost
loosing breath and seems like he is holding his breath and finally starts a bout
of coughing and usually ends up throwing up. It is worse at night.
On the web site it appears HELPHAR Sulphate might be the homeopathic remedy. Is
this correct or is their another remedy you can recommend. This is going in to
the 3rd week and he is getting sick at least 2 to 3 times per day.
How often do I give and have you any idea how long croop lasts.
What is difference between croop and whooping cough.

Hello and welcome, I would like to help you by answering your question. Croup is
a common condition in childhood that affects the larynx and is characterised by
difficult and noisy breathing and a hoarse cough. Whooping cough is an acute
infectious disease marked by recurrent attacks of spasmodic coughing ending with
a deep noisy inspiration.

Hepar Sulph is commonly indicated in croup but there are other possible remedies
as well. If you like, I can ask you a few questions and determine which is the
best option for him? Has he been seen by a doctor?

Customer:

Yes- the doctor did not diagnose croop but on reading up myself I made this
diagnosis. Doctor recommended sucking lozengers to help soothe the cough.

Customer:

That was his diagnosis.

Ok, so there was no concern that it might be whooping cough?

Customer:

No not really. Checked his chest was not caught and that was ok

dr_jane :

Ok. From what time of the night does the cough get worse? Is there anything that
seems to bring the cough on - eg food, drink, exertion, cold air, talking,change
of temperature. Is he better for throwing up? Does anything else relieve
symptoms?

Customer:

When he lies down the cough appears worse but I think the spasms seem worse
because he has been sleeping and then panicks. First he tries to cry and gasps
and then starts coughing eventually. I try to prop him up with neck pillows to
ease the situation. There doesn't appear to be anything that brings on the
cough. Initially it was every 45mins - 1 hour during the night but last night it
was every 2 hours. He does appear better after throwing up. He tends to hold
back and does not wish to throw up until involuntarily reaction takes over. If
there is nothing left to throw up - he will swallow back the phelgm again

Can you say what the cough sounds like? Is it tickly in his throat. Is he worse
the more he coughs? Any blueness to the face? Is the vomit mainly mucus?

Is there anything seemingly unrelated to the cough but that is different to
usual about him since the cough started?

(There are an awful lot of remedies for cough in homeopathy!) Has he been
feeling nauseous alongside the cough and vomiting?

Customer:

The cough just sounds like a normal cough preceded with gasping.He's does not
get any worse the more he coughs and no blueness to the face.

Customer:

The cough sounds like a chesty cough and he is trying to bring up phelgm.
Sometimes during the day it is preceded with gasping but more at night.

with gasping but this is mainly at night. It is not tickly in his throat and he
does not appear worse the more he coughs. There is no blueness to the face and
the vomit is more the food that he has eaten with some mucus.

Ok, the remedy I recommend he has is Coccus Cacti 30c - a liquid dose will be
easier for him to take. If you don;t have a homeopathic pharmacy locally, you

Nothing different either.

He should have one dose (5 drops in a little water) three times daily, reducing
as symptoms improve to 2 doses then 1 dose - so phasing it out gradually. If the
symptoms go, stop the remedy. If symptoms improve but are not quite gone,
continue taking the remedy for a little longer until they resolve. If the
improvements last, then that's great. If symptoms get better but then get worse
again, then he can have a few more doses of the remedy. If there are no changes
at all, then he will most likely need to try a different remedy. My second
choice of remedy for him would Sanguinaria 30c which could be taken in the same
way. Please let me know if you have any questions about this or if you would
like more details.
