Hello. I would like to help you with your question concerning alternatives for Glucosamine/Chondroitin supplements. There are indeed a number of herbal and vitamin supplements that could have the same effect or better. I'm assuming that your guy is using the supplements for osteoarthritis and maybe knee pain, which is where Glucosamine/Chondroitin has its best reputation. Herbs to treat osteoarthritis include Devil's Claw, Turmeric, and Bromelain which is an enzyme extracted from pineapple. I have never prescribed plantain extract to treat osteoarthrits, but I suppose that it could be appropriate in some cases. There is an anti-inflammatory herbal supplement called Zyflamend which may be helpful. Sometimes osteoarthritis can be caused by food allergies. In some individuals, a dietary intolerance to fruit can lead to joint pain and knee pain. The SAMe and Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) are probably quite similar in their actions, so you could start with one or the other of these. The dosage for SAMe is 400mg, one to three times per day. It can take 2 to 4 weeks before positive results start to appear. The dose for the MSM is 3 grams, twice per day and the research studies say that results are obtained within a few months.
The Niacinamide can be used by itself or with other supplements and herbs. It needs to be taken in a high dose in order to be effective against knee pain though. A good starting dose is 500mg, two or three times per day with meals. The only drawback of niacinamide is that it can cause an upset stomach in some people. This usually resolves if the dose is lowered.
The New Chapter Zyflamend can be effective by itself. Depending on the severity of the knee pain, it may be necessary to add one or more of the other supplements to the mix.
The simplest plan is to pick one or two of these options and see how they work. The remaining choices can be kept as "back ups" in case the expected results are not achieved.
