My sixteen year old daughter has been experiencing

Hi Dr. Camp,

Thanks for your reply. The pain is pretty central under her navel, occasionally closer

to the left side. It was really bad last week when she was ovulating, but she had the

big stabbing pains again last night. She has always had bad premenstrual cramps.

Holding the area (pressure) gives her some relief. We've tried a heating pad which

she says gives some comfort, but not really pain relief.The pain used to go away

following her period but is now there throughout the cycle, worse during ovulation.

She has been breaking out a lot more with facial acne which used to be under

control.

Most people would describe Ali as cheerful, good natured, mature, very

responsible. A real gem of a girl!

She has strong leadership skills, lots of friends and is on student council and

the basketball team. I wonder whether her pain could have to do with feeling

rejected by boys. She has mentioned that all of her friends have boyfriends

and she does not. I feel they are intimidated by her good looks, height (6ft)

and smarts. One boy asked her out recently and she thought the date went

very well, but then he did not follow up on it.

She has not had a father figure since she was young and I have

the same problem on the dating scene as she is experiencing, unfortunately.

As well, basketball has not been going well this season- she is not playing well

and I'm not sure if that's because she hasn't been feeling well, or not feeling well

because she's not playing well. Also there is stress around choosing what

university program to apply to as she is in her last year of highschool. Perhaps

all of this is impacting her. Her only brother is in 2nd year of university, out of

town and I know she misses him too.

Her diet is probably on the healthy side of the typical teenager. Neither of us

like or eat much meat--only chicken and sometimes beef. She likes fruit, most

veggies.pasta,soup, fajitas, stir fries, etc. but sometimes has strong cravings for pizza

or fries or peanut butter cups. She does not snack on chips or candy, or drink

pop. Probably could use less carbs and more protein in the diet. She has

always been lean- she has gained about ten pounds and some curves over the

last year or two she doesn't really like, but there are no signs of an eating

disorder.Sometimes her stomach makes very noisy growls, and sometimes

she says it "swishes" .(?) I've wondered about taking her off wheat and dairy

to see if that makes a difference but it would be hard for her. She does like

milk and yogurt, and bread products- has never been fond of brown bread.

Ali has some unusual bowel movements. Diarrhea sometimes, and often

stinky movements when they are regular. Last week when she was in the

most pain, she described her movements as like "little pellets".

She says that she does not necessarily have a bowel movement daily,

Sometimes once every two days and they are not strained.

Also, if it is relevant, I did not have painful periods as a girl but got

very heavy periods a few years back and had a hysterectomy due to

large fibroids.
