Question

My 6 year old son has been getting fevers that range from 99 degrees to 105
degrees. This is the third time this summer. The first time the doctor was not
able to find a cause. The second time he had a throat infection and the doctor
thought it was a virus due to the fluctuating temperatures. This time he is
occassionally slightly congested. Each time the fever will start low (around
99.2) and he will be emotional and tearful for a short time. Then his mood seems
back to his usual good nature. The temperature will go up and down, even down to
norma,l and does not seem to be related to the time of day. His appetite and
thirst does not change. He usually continues to be active and alert.
Occassionally he will say he's tired but rarely will lay down or take naps. His
teacher said that 2 other children in his class have been getting fevers this
summer, as well. We have given him tylenol when the fever gets to 104 or 105 and
then it drops to around 97.2 withing 30 minutes. We have also given him a
homeopathic cold remedy called Cold'n Cough 4 Kids by Hyland's. These fevers
tend to last around 5 or 6 days.

I just checked his temperature with a thermal scanner thermometer. It was 100.4
on one side and 100.7 on the other. His face is warm and dry but not hot. His

Not recently. He had surgery last August. He was born in China with bilateral
cleft lip and palate. He came here at age 3 1/2 and had had several surgeries in
China. The one last August was to tighten his soft palate and they added a bone
graft material to fill in the bones in his upper jaw. It was called Actafuse. He
initially did have a high fever after that for a short time. I had wondered
about him having a delayed reaction to this, but 2 other students have been
having fevers also.
