Is the connections using a 3.5mm plug to twin RCA plugs similar to the product shown HERE? ...and plugged into any unused red & white input RCA jacks of the AVR-1604?

I feel like the problem Is in the receiver ? Analog ? Have not used for awhile and maybe speaker hooked up wrong?

Also remember there was something about the display that if the wrong button got pushed it wouldn't play ? I have always hated this reciever not very user friendly

Still, perhaps you can try the Denon in AM or FM? ...or even consider a RESET?
