I can't give you a specific date, that info is not available, but this has been a code requirement for at least 35 years.

My house was built in 1970 - 1971 time frame and a recent sale inspection called for replacing the original door. But I believe I'm Grandfathered on the sale because of age. But a negotiation is possible if backfitting is required by law. Ideas?

Fire code regulations, like smoke detectors and fire rated doors, are generally not grandfathered and are typically required upgrades when a property changes hands.
