How long can you leave painters'' tape on the wall before it will pull off existing paint, if it will at all?

With latex paints (and some others) it should be taken off right away because when they dry, they create a 'skin' that will dry to the tape and peel pieces off with it, creating jagged edges. I usually remove about an hour after painting. If the tape has been left on longer, you can take a razor blade/knife and cut just thru along the line of the tape.
