If I had unprotected sex with a female 9 to 10 years ago and contracted hiv - would I know it by now ?

If you've been tested for HIV, you would know it whether you contracted it or not.

Most people infected with HIV will test positive within 3 months, and everyone will test positive within 6 months. As long as you had a test 6 months or more after possible exposure that was negative, you did not contract HIV, Best regards,
