VerifiedHello, My name is XXXXX XXXXX I may be able to help you out. I have not experienced this problem with a Cummins yet, but I have experienced it with a Caterpillar 3406 used in an industrial application where it is being operated under continuous heavy loads. what I have found is that unless I have the machine shop that reconditions my cylinder heads open the new valve guides to the maximum worn spec. then the valves will drag in the guides and cause excessive valve train loads which will cause intermittent crosshead breakage. My customer purchased 11 3406C engines in 1995 and they use them on water pumps, they performed well until about 2001 when they all began to have valve train problems, the problem got worse in about 2007. I can't prove it but I believe that low sulfur diesel fuel introduced in 2001 and the ultra low diesel fuel that was introduced in 2007 have something to do with the problem. Another thing that I have seen cause crosshead breakage on a Komatsu engine was that the machine shop that reconditioned the cylinder heads used the wrong valve springs and the springs would bottom out before the rocker arm was finished traveling. I'm sorry I don't have an exact answer for you but I suspect there is either a parts mismatch or the valve guides are too tight when the engine gets hot. I hope this helps. If so then there could be a problem in your valves and guides, recent machine work, or something is not right with either the overhead. I would double check the timing and the overhead and take a close look at the heads.... I hope this helps. Let me know if you need further assistance
