The complexity of this hydraulic system is too great to explain here. The best information is from CAT manual # XXXXX and the following manuals will cover the rest of the systems.

Reference: For Specifications with illustrations make reference to 315 And 315 L Excavators, Hydraulic System, Specifications, SENR6184. If the specifications in SENR6184 are not the same as in the Systems Operation, look at the printing date on the front cover of each book. Use the specifications in the book with the latest date.

I would agree you have trash in a valve. I would say it is in the motor instead of the control valve. When something is stuck in the control valve it will be uncontrollable. If a relief valve is stuck open, side would be weak. Inspect the spool in the counterbalance valve on the travel motor. This is part of the motor cover. Inspect all the valves and clean out debris, this could fix your trouble.
