97 n14 cummins that started idling fine..pulling..hill

This answer was rated:

Hi i have a 97 N14 cummins that started idling rough between 600 & 900 rpm but seems to run fine when driving but has been sounding like a locomotive or slight knocking noise when im pulling a heavy load or going up a hill
hello are there any check engine lights on when this happens?

Ok some common causes of a miss with out codes is an improper overhead setting (valves and injectors) an engine position sensor, (check for bubbles on the face and oil intrusion through the connector) or a injector starting to fail you would need to do a cylinder cut out test under the circumstance that it happens to detect

The truck has 717000 miles and the center head was redone 17000 miles ago . Do you think i should get it checked out first before i look into the fuel system
Yes i would let a shop look into it with the computer software first. An engine with that kind of mileage on it would normally be due to get ALL injectors replaced IF one or 2 just get done the older ones fail not to soon after.
