The solenoid is the starter relay and it only should have power to the switch wire, which should be the green wire, it when the key is in the start position. It should have battery power to the large terminal from the batteries, and the switch should close and energize the starter when the solenoid is activated in the start position.

That wasn't very clear. The big terminal should be hot all the time and the solenoid closes to send power to the starter.

What happens when the key is put to the on position then and the relay in de-energized. It appears the alternator would quit working.

The alternator should be on the positive side of the battery connection and would not be affected by the starter relay function.

The cable that is hot all the time is the cable I am talking about. The positive cable from the battery.

How does the solenoid on the starter get energized? I have traced that wire to what appears to be another relay and it is located in the counsel in the cab. It looks like the cab relay gets it's power from the relay in the back when it is energized. Sorry about all the questions but I have not seen this machine when it was working correctly and the owner has tried to repair it himself.

Does the solenoid in the back have cable from battery and cable to the starter solenoid? The solenoid should get its power from the same green wire , at the same time as the starter relay. The normal progression , is that the positive battery cable terminal on the first solenoid should have small wire that feeds the cab relay and key switch. The key switch when turned to start, sends power to the starter relay and the starter solenoid to close both solenoids and power the starter to crank the engine.

Yes the solenoid in the back is hooked to the positive battery post on one side and then goes to the large post on the starter solenoid from the other side. A #10 red wire goes from the positive post side of the rear solenoid to the key and powers up the dash in the on position. The starter solenoid battery post has a #10 white/red stripe wire that goes to the relay in the councel in the cab and then returns to the energizing post on the starter solenoid via a red #10 wire. The key start position must have to energize the relay in the councel simultaneously with the rear starter relay. Is this whole wiring sequence to allow for a master shut off (the rear solenoid) and a larger wire to energize the starter solenoid?

Yes, the relay solenoid is used in the rear to keep from having to run the larger size cables to the cab. You should be able to jump from the positive cable side of the solenoid to the switch wire and the solenoid should close and send power to the starter solenoid. Does it close when the switch is turned to start?

Yes the solenoid does work in the back by the batteries. It's the relay in the counsel that I am suspecting to be the problem once all the wires are hooked properly. I will be away from my computer until morning. Thanks again Curtis.
